Prof.  Sebastien Ourselin, 

Head, School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, King's College London

Biography: Professor Sebastien Ourselin FREng, is Head of the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences at King’s College London. He is also Director of the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Medical Engineering and Deputy Director of the London Medical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence Centre for Value Based Healthcare. He has over 20 yers of experience within academia and research organisations across three countries. Alongside Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, he is leading the establishment of a MedTech Hub, located at St Thomas’ campus. The vision for the Hub is to create a unique ecosystem, enabling academia, industry and the NHS to work in synergy and develop health technologies (including medical devices), workforce and operational improvements that will be of global significance. He has significant experience in translating and commercialising healthcare technology and is a co-founding member of two academic spin-out companies.


Dr. Hongliang Ren, 

Associate Professor, Dept. of Electronic Engineering, CUHK

Biography: Professor Hongliang Ren received his Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering (Specialized in Biomedical Engineering) from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2008. He has been navigating his academic journey through Chinese University of Hong Kong, UC Berkeley, Johns Hopkins University, Children’s Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School, Children’s National Medical Center, United States, and National University of Singapore. He has served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Automation Science & Engineering (T-ASE) and Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing (MBEC). He has served as an active organizer and contributor on the committees of numerous robotics conferences, including a variety of roles in the flagship IEEE Conf. on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), IEEE Conf. on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS), as well as other domain conferences such as MICCAI/ROBIO/BIOROB/ICIA/CVPR. He served as publicity chair for ICRA 2017, concurrently as Organizing Chair for ICRA 2017 workshop on Surgical Robots, and video chair for ICRA 2021. He has delivered numerous invited keynotes/talks at flagship conferences/workshops at ICRA/IROS/ROBIO/MICCAI/CVPR/ICIA. He is the recipient of IFMBE/IAMBE Early Career Award 2018, Interstellar Early Career Investigator Award 2018, Health Longevity Catalyst Award (2022 by NAM & RGC), NUS Engineering Young Researcher Award (2019), Interstellar Early Career Investigator Award (2018), ICBHI (Biomedical and Health Informatics) Young Investigator Award (2019), NUS Young Investigator Award (2013), EMedic Global Gold Medal (2017) and Silver Medal (2021), Best Paper Awards in IEEE-ROBIO (2019 & 2013), IEEE-RCAR2016, IEEE-CCECE2015, IEEE-Cyber2014 among 30+ others awards.

He frequently served as an expert reviewer/judge for international funding agencies (60+ proposal reviews) of 10+ countries/regions (including Switzerland, Belgium, UK, Kazakhstan, Poland, Hong Kong, Macau, Chilean, China, Singapore etc.) and manuscript peer-reviews 317+ times for journals, including Science Robotics, Nature Biomedical Engineering, Nature Communications among many other top-tier journals (Please refer to the Web of Science Reviewer Recognition for the service records).


Dr. Yixuan Yuan,
Assistant Professor, Dept. of Electronic Engineering, CUHK

Biography: Yixuan Yuan is an assistant professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering, Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research interest is AI in healthcare to promote precision medicine, especially for medical image diagnosis, abnormality detection, and segmentation. She was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, City University of Hong Kong during 2018-2022 and she was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Radiation Oncology, Stanford Cancer Center, Stanford University during 2017-2018. She received the Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2016 with Hong Kong Postgraduate Fellowship (HKPFS), the B.S. degree in Automation from Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) with honor in 2010. She received several premium awards including the CVPR 2022 Best Paper Finalist, MICCAI 2022 Young Scientist Award (supervisor), Outstanding Teacher Award 2018/19 in CityU EE, 2017 Young Scientist Award in Engineering by Hong Kong Institute of Science, Best Paper Award in ICMA 2013, School of Medicine Dean’s Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stanford University. 


Dr. Hao Chen, 

Assistant Professor, Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering, HKUST

Biography: Dr. Hao Chen is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He leads the SMART Lab focusing on trustworthy artificial intelligence for healthcare and serves as Associate Director in Center of Medical Imaging and Analysis. He obtained the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship in 2013 and received the PhD degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2017. He was a postdoctoral research fellow in CUHK and a visiting scholar in Utrecht University Medical Center previously.

His research interests include medical image analysis, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision and bioinformatics. He has over 100 peer-reviewed publications (Google Scholar Citations 16,500+, h-index 57) in MICCAI, IEEE-TMI, MIA, CVPR, AAAI, Radiology, Lancet Digital Health, Nature Machine Intelligence, JAMA, etc. He received several premium awards including the MICCAI Young Scientist Impact Award in 2019 and a number of best paper awards. He also has rich industrial research experience and holds a dozen of patents. He serves as an Associate Editor of multiple journals including IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics, Neurocomputing, Computerized Medical Imaging and Graphics, Medical Physics, etc. He also served as a program committee (PC) member of multiple international conferences including Area Chair of MICCAI 2021 & 2022, ISBI 2022, MIDL 2022 and Senior PC of AAAI 2022, etc. During the past few years, he led his team winning 15+ medical grand challenges.


Prof. Hongbin Liu, 

Executive Director of CAIR, HKISI, CAS

Biography: Professor Liu is Executive Director of the Centre for AI and Robotics (CAIR), Hong Kong Institute of Science & Innovation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Professor at Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Automation (CASIA), and Group Director for intelligent minimally invasive technologies of CASIA. Prior to joining Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prior to joining CAS, Professor Liu served as a Reader in Medical Robotics at King’s College London (KCL), UK and Director of the Haptics Mechatronics and Medical Robotics (HaMMeR) Laboratory. Professor Liu is the recipient of prestigious national talent award, CAS talent award.

Prof. Liu has been focusing on research and development of haptic sensing technology and minimally invasive flexible surgical robotic system in the past 15 years. His group aims to create fully sensorized surgical robot with self-evolving intelligence for safer and more effective diagnosis and treatment. Research directions include haptic and proprioceptive sensing, real-time surgical simulation, soft/flexible robot actuation, and multimodality-based navigation and control. Prof Liu has been closely working with industrial patterners including IBM and Huawei, and his research has led to the clinical translation of a series of flexible surgical robotic systems for applications such as minimally invasive neurosurgery, bronchoscopy as well as vascular surgery.
